How to read market breadth
If the Nifty 50 rises but breadth is weak -- more stocks falling than rising -- the gain is likely coming from a handful of heavyweight stocks, while the broader market is quietly weaker. Conversely, strong breadth on a flat index day suggests underlying strength that the index number alone doesn't show. Traders and analysts use breadth as a cross-check against index-level moves precisely because the Nifty 50 is weighted toward its largest companies.
Breadth is one of the six inputs to the Equilytics Mood Index, scored directly as advances divided by (advances + declines), with no historical ranking needed since the ratio is already bounded between 0 and 100.
